A comprehensive mediation training course will be offered at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College come March 2010, as part of the institution’s efforts to provide university-parallel and adult continuing education programmes.
The Mediator Certification Course will be offered in collaboration with the United States-based Mediation Training Institute, the world’s leading provider of training and certification in the core competencies for managing workplace conflict. The dates will be 18-24 March at the College’s Centre for Applied Marine Studies, Paraquita Bay and the cost has been set at $1,800 per person.
Main presenter will be Dr. Nancy Love, MTI’s Senior Mediation Instructor and Certification Conference Instructor, who has 20 years' experience as educator, school administrator, educational programme designer, author and mediator.
Dr. Love earned her Ph.D. from the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada and received formal training in mediation and negotiation through the Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society. She is currently a court mediator with the Provincial Court Civil Division and with School Boards in Alberta.
Organisations worldwide are discovering the immense benefits of using mediation over traditional, and sometimes adversarial, methods of resolving disputes. Research has shown that the financial cost of unresolved conflicts is high and takes an enormous toll on organisations. However, the costs associated with litigation and grievance-handling can be significantly reduced by early mediation, which also helps to prevent conflicts from escalating into formal disputes.
Further, mediation not only provides a mechanism for the early resolution of many problems, but also increases productivity, saves time and money, creates a safer and more harmonious workplace, and promotes enhanced day-to-day relationships.
As a precursor to the course, the College had hosted a promotional and informational session last November to determine the level of interest in the course among professionals in the territory.
