At the University of New Brunswick, the Diploma in University Teaching is awarded to faculty members and contract instructors, as well as graduate students, who intend to pursue teaching careers in higher education. Among other things, the award is designed to allow participants to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes to enhance their competence in the teaching-learning process.

Ms. O’Neal is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Marine Biology with a concentration on Ecotoxicology and Pollution. Her project is focusing on tributyltin, a biocide found in anti-fouling paint to deter algae, barnacles and other organisms from settling on the bottom of boats.

She currently holds a bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a master’s in Applied Marine Science from the University of Plymouth in the United Kingdom.

“I would like to thank the Administrators at HLSCC for their continued support of my project by allowing me to use the College’s boat MV Grady White, the laboratories and other facilities at the Centre for Applied Marine Studies,” said Ms. O’Neal by telephone from Canada.

“I am also grateful to those individuals at the College who continue to show their love and support while I’m on study leave,” she added.

Ms. O’Neal, who began her doctoral programme in 2006, said she hopes to complete her studies by 2010, before returning to the British Virgin Islands.
